What role do gaits play in the selection of a dressage horse?
Q:
A: This depends on the level of dressage horse that you are looking for. In all cases you need a horse with three satisfactory gaits: walk with an clear 4 beat, trot with nice swing and the canter with a clear three beat and covering the ground.
For the amateur rider do not be attracted to the big moving horse, often there is too much movement for you to sit in easily. Only purchase a horse that is comfortable for you to ride. Remember that all horses who move with a hollow or tight back are not comfortable. Check if this is a training or a conformational issue. Once the amateur is riding fourth level and above then you may wish to move onto a better moving horse with three good gaits.

For the rider who is looking for a top horse for national and international competition you need excellent gaits with swinging back, free shoulders and active carrying power from behind.
The gaits do not make the horse, we also require good temperament, conformation and health.
